Broken Hill BESS

Project Overview:

The Broken Hill Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project demonstrates the role of large-scale battery systems in supporting grid stability and renewable energy integration. As part of a $41 million initiative, Altrad (formerly Valmec) collaborated with Fluence Energy to deliver a full turnkey solution, encompassing project management, construction, and commissioning support. This facility supports grid strength by utilising advanced grid-forming inverters, addressing the increasing demand for energy storage driven by the growth of renewable energy and the shift from coal-fired power generation.

Scope:

  • Detailed Civil and Structural, Mechanical, and Piping (SMP) works for the installation of BESS battery bank modules and inverters.
  • Electrical works, including the design and installation of multiple in-ground high-voltage (HV) cable runs and commissioning of the HV system.
  • Commissioning support to Fluence Energy for plant startup and system optimisation.

Outcomes:

  • Delivered a cutting-edge battery storage facility to enhance grid strength and renewable energy integration.
  • Supported Fluence in successfully commissioning the system, ensuring seamless startup and operational efficiency.
  • Completed the project with full compliance under the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (FSC) accreditation scheme, maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Contributed to demonstrating the potential of advanced grid-forming battery systems in Australia’s energy landscape.
